Itteh Bitteh Kittehs

We were in Eugene this past weekend, visiting family and generally being bums. We finally got to see my sister Helen's house and her baby kittens. As a way of explanation, my sister volunteers for a no-kill animal shelter and finds homes for displaced/unwanted kitties. She ended up with the kittens (and their mother) because they were found on someone's farm land while she was picking up cats to be spayed.

We call this a "cat stack"

Helen tried to see how many cats she could stick in her mouth. The answer is one.

I think this one was Moonbeam.

They have the cutest blue eyes

My mom was either wearing this cat as a hat or this cat was wearing my mom as a belt.

This cat was so snuggly!

Josh played a video of cats meowing and the kittens freaked out. Uh-Door-uh-Bull!

While in Eugene, Helen and Josh also jammed on the banjo, guitar, and ukelele:

Island in the Sun

I'm the Varsity Scout Coach and assistant Teachers Quorum advisor in our ward. There's a combined YM/YW talent show next week, although most of the boys won't even be there. Nonetheless, we thought it best to practice a song this evening... and then eat pizza while watching TRON: Legacy. It was a fun night. Here's the result of our practice:

Hawaiian Map Hijinks

While we were at Pearl Harbor, we found this big map on the ground.

First, Josh asked me to stand over Hawaii:

Then he told me to stand on Portland while HE stood on Hawaii:

Then he told me to stand on both Portland and Hawaii, making a highly unlikely and structurally unsound bridge with my body:

He said that he thought of this series of pictures as "What Can I Get Emily To Do in a Picture?"

A lot, apparently.

Eliminating Fish Burps (revisited)

Remember when I was complaining about the inconvenience of fish burps?

Well, this is what Josh got me for our anniversary (among other things, of course):

They're "odorless," which cuts down on the fish burping

First anniversary is paper, second anniversary is cotton (or straw?), and apparently the third anniversary is fish pills. Very thoughtful!

P.S. No, this is not in any way sarcastic. Josh is the best present-giver I know, and this present was especially thoughtful because I complain about the fish burps so much (mostly because, like an idiot, I usually end up taking them with Diet Coke). I also got the awesome combination gift of an upright steam vac and a Shark, for which I have been begging since I stayed up all night watching the infomercial in DC. We had a wonderful anniversary.

Trek in the Park (epic fail)

As a low-cost (free) birthday present for Josh, I promised him that we could go to "Trek in the Park" at Woodlawn Park on Saturday. I'm not a huge fan of Star Trek, but Josh has been a huge fan since childhood, and I know I need to be more open to new experiences. The only problem is, I had NO idea how popular this event is (though I should have realized that if I have heard of it, then most of the rest of the Portland metropolitan area has also heard of it), and we only arrived 20 minutes early, so this was our view:

There was a concrete walkway a few feet in front of us, and as people arrived even later than we had, they just stood along the walkway right in front of all the people sitting down! It was super obnoxious, though a guy who is much more brazen than I am asked them to move (I was so thankful!), but then even more people came late and stood in the way.

A guy who worked security had the job to clear the walkway so that the actors could make their exits unimpeded. But then HE stood RIGHT IN THE WAY! At that point, I checked out of the show. The episode they were performing was "Space Seed," which Josh tried to watch before we went (but fell asleep, though by his estimation, he's probably seen the episode 30-40 times throughout his life) and recommended I watch (but I was doing something else).

If you look closely, you can see me in the background, annoyed, and the guy in the red shirt standing right in my way

I started feeling really sick about halfway through, so I made Josh leave early. He was able to stand closer to watch, but I didn't want to stand for the whole time crammed next to other (smelly) people. Plus, I was comfortable on my little camp chair in the shade (until I felt like my guts were being ripped out of my body).

I think Josh had a good time, though.

At least, he looks happy

We'll try again next year, come earlier, plan for a bigger crowd, not throw up on people (not that I did that, though I may have been concerned it would happen), but this time it was kind of a bust. Josh is already excited because our good friend from our Eugene Institute days, Wyatt Spear, who met us at the park and stayed the entire time, told us that at the end of the performance they announced next year's selection will be the classic second-season episode (and of Josh's all-time favorite TOS installments!), "Mirror , Mirror." I have a feeling Josh is already planning to grow a goatee in honor of the alternate-universe Spock.

BTW: Josh waited until we were walking to the park to tell me that there has been gang-related shootings in the same park to which we were heading. He assured me that we (probably) wouldn't get shot. And he was right (this time).

Stuff to do Before Josh Turns 30: Pittock Mansion, Hollywood Theater, and All the Apparatus

Ever since we moved to the Portland area three years ago, I've been telling Josh that we need to visit the Pittock Mansion, since it combines things we both love: old houses and journalism. With Josh's 30th birthday looming ahead in less than a month, we finally made the effort.

Here are some things we saw:

The Mansion

Cool ceilings

Random cat portrait

Mt. Hood

Josh also wants to visit all of the older, independent theaters in Portland, so we went to the Hollywood Theater to see The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (since I have now read the trilogy). I'm not a huge fan of that part of Portland, but the theater is interesting.

I'm not sure what kind of face Josh is making, but the sun was directly in our eyes.

Detail

Finally, we made the trek downtown to see our friend's band All the Apparatus. I've been listening to their CD nonstop for the past couple weeks. They are really good, and if you ever find yourself downtown on a Saturday night, I recommend seeking them out on SW 5th and Morrison in downtown Portland.

Josh and Mercury (plus: being thankful for nerdy friends)

Josh took the cats to the vet the other day and we discovered that Mercury, our resident irascible fat cat has lost an entire pound (yay!) and that she has now graduated to Senior Cat status (being all of 8 years old now). When  Josh and I first started dating, Mercury hated him (probably because he would pick her up and pretend she was dancing), but in the past year or so Merc has really warmed up to him. Sometimes she will even approach him for snuggling! After bringing her back from the vet, however, Josh was sad to discover that they were in a fight. He texted me a few hours later when I was in class, though, because apparently she had forgiven him and they were friends again.

Tonight, this is what it looked like in the ShepAlder house:

Josh was loving Merc

Merc was loving Josh

Then Josh started singing "Paparazzi" and pretending I had caught him in the middle of a tryst. Mercury was clearly not amused.

I'm glad that they made up, though I'm a little jealous. Mercury was my only roommate for five years before I married Josh, and for a long time I was the only one she loved. Of course, Josh is the one that feeds her, so.... I understand.

In Other News:
I absolutely love new friends, especially when we find something in common about which we are both besotted. This week my friend and classmate Stephanie loaned to me her Wii copies of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" and "Evil Under the Sun" and I got to loan to her a couple of my Nancy Drew games. It has really made my week! Plus, she told me about where to get free kindle books. (BTW: I have a Kindle now, but I will probably write about that some other day). I love making friends who are as nerdy as I am!

Josh Demanded This Be Included

After reading my last post, Josh said, "But you forgot about 'The Tonight Show'!" It's true. When we were in Southern California in October, we got to see "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien." We've both been Conan fans since he started hosting "Late Night" back in 1993, but neither of us had ever seen a taping of either of his shows in person.

The ticket

We didn't realize at the time that Conan was going to host for such a short period of time, but now we're really glad that we went. We even had VIP tickets, which meant that we didn't have to stand in line and got to sit toward the front, because Josh is randomly an acquaintance of Mark "The Love Man" Pender, who was the trumpet man in the Tonight Show band. Seriously.

On the set with Mark Pender

Josh says this about the experience:
"I met Mark Pender when I interviewed him back in 2005 at the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival. We'd stayed in touch since then, exchanging emails here and there. He'd always told me to give him a holler if I was ever in NYC, but sadly, that never happened. When Conan took over The Tonight Show in June 2009, I was determined that we'd see him live the next time we were in L.A. Mark was nice enough to get us VIP tickets for the Oct. 13 show. The guests were Ice-T, Eddie Izzard and The Flaming Lips. It was a really cool experience, and as evidenced by this photo above, Mark waited around to greet us after the show. Later, Mark and I met up at The Baked Potato, a little club in Studio City where we watched Ronnie Guiterrez (who played bongos in The Tonight Show Band when Max Weinberg was on tour with Bruce Springsteen) and his father play some lively salsa music. It was an awesome evening!"

I also found these pictures of the Hotel Del, taken with Josh's phone (I wanted to share them because our other pictures were so foggy and made it look like the weather was bad the entire time, when it was really only overcast on our checkout day):

At twilight, from our balcony

The beach, also from our balcony

Me on the beach, possibly in the spot where Some Like it Hot was filmed

We loved the Hotel Del so much, we're planning to have our 20th anniversary party there (in 17 years).

Settle an Argument

Josh thinks that Lady Liberty's face resembles that of actor Jeff Goldblum. What do you think?

I'm Being Overrun!

Most of the time, I am oblivious of what goes on in our house. Messy kitchen? Smelly cats? It usually doesn't bother me. However, every so often I actually pay attention, and that's when I notice things like this:

When we moved into our house nearly two years ago, I made Josh put all of his toys in bins so that they wouldn't be all over the place all the time because I absolutely hate clutter. (This is something few people know about me, but I hate, hate, HATE owning things that are nonfunctional, whereas Josh refuses to get rid of anything). In the past two years, it seems that Josh's toys have reproduced. I generally don't spend much time in the bonus room because it's so messy and it smells like cat, but the other day I was printing out some articles for my behavioral neuroscience project, and saw that the computer desk is now COVERED in collectibles. Josh is obsessed with these Star Wars Galactic Heroes and explained to me that he needed the whole set in order to be authentic. Huge eye roll!

One thing I've learned about marriage is to pick my battles, which is why I let Josh keep his collectibles in a room I barely visit, but then a couple days ago I came home to find this in the hallway:

I think Josh's dad gave this to him for Christmas, so I can't complain that Josh is spending his money on ridiculous things. And perhaps I should applaud Josh for finally unpacking his bag of Christmas presents. But I don't know whether I should put my foot down. I don't know whether in two weeks I will walk into the hall to see a whole set of these things. (About my disgust, Josh replied, "Remember that you love me!" and then folded his arms and tapped his foot impatiently).

I suppose there are worse things. I could have married someone who was less awesome.

In other news, this is what became of the clothes from our closet:

Thankfully, we had a room we weren't using. (That was sarcastic. I am in fact very sad about this whole thing).

Also, I found out this week that I will be working at Lewis & Clark as a mental health counselor during the next school year. It was by far my first choice for a practicum experience, and the only place at which I interviewed. At the time, I thought my interview went well, but of course as I was leaving I had all sorts of regrets about what I said and I thought of all sorts of things that I should have said. But it worked out in the end. My favorite part about L&C is that it reminds me of my first alma mater, which I love and miss. The campus is so beautiful, it makes me jealous of all the people who are able to go there.

Happy Birthday to Josh!

Few people know this, but mine and Josh's birthdays are less than a week apart during the Month of a Million Celebrations (July) in the ShepAlder household. We were also married in July, a week after Josh's birthday and a day after mine.

Unfortunately for Josh, who is probably the best present-giver I have ever met, I'm not so good with planning ahead. Where Josh thinks about presents for months in advance, I am more likely to wake up on the day of and think to myself, "Wasn't there something I was supposed to do today?" It isn't that I don't care or that I don't think planning ahead is important, I am just really, really, REALLY bad at keeping secrets, so to compensate, I have a tendency to, on the day, say, "I am planning to get this for you." Every once in awhile, I will hit Gift Gold, plan months in advance, and actually keep my mouth shut, but those times are rare.

I think my best showing for me was our first birthday celebration together back in 2006 when I got Josh a Dwight Shrute bobblehead and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. This year, I had imagined July to be a month of magic and wonder, but unfortunately things didn't go as pictured (mostly because I was picturing rather than doing, but also because I spent most of July either at school, NARA, or sleeping-- in fact, I had to take a final in the morning instead of doing something nice like cook breakfast).

But Josh still had some excitement on his birthday:

Instead of a cake, I got some birthday doughnuts
since there are only two of us.
I may or may not have eaten 80% of them...

Josh pretty much never grew up, so I figured it was
fitting to buy some Transformers party supplies.

They came in handy when we had Josh's desired birthday dinner--
Chinese food.

Something that my family does (sometimes-- when we remember) on birthdays is go around the room and say one nice thing about the birthday person. Since Josh and I are only a family of two, it's up to me to fulfill the tradition!

So, here's a list of 29 (in celebration of Josh's 29th birthday) things I love about Josh:

1. He takes care of me when I'm sick, which actually happens more often than it should, for two reasons: 1. I whine a lot, and 2. I get stressed and therefore get stress headaches really easily.

2. He makes up words to otherwise wordless themesongs. An example is the words he made up to my favorite show, "Murder, She Wrote" that starts with "Oh it's a show called Murder, She Wrote..."

3. He doesn't like to eat a lot of ice cream. So this leaves it all for me!

4. He can accurately finish my sentences. I always check to make sure he's right, so that when I say, "I think we should..." and he says, "I know," it isn't that he thinks I was going to say, "I think we should build giant net to catch our neighbor's dog" instead of "I think we should eat pasta for dinner." He's always right, though.

5. He plans ahead for vacations. Right now we're planning for Washington DC in August, and Josh has been reading guidebooks and TripAdvisor for at least 3 months, possibly 6. Just now he said, "I'm going to make a list of all the restaurants in DC to take with us so we'll know where to eat." Before we got a GPS for our car, he would print out pages of google maps. When we went to Austin for the first time, he knew how to get around almost better than my sister who lives there!

6. He does the chores that I abhor. These include: cleaning the catbox, taking out the trash, and washing the dishes.

7. He plays the guitar. He even taught himself when he was an RA at the University of Oregon. Sometimes he'll break it out and give me a personal concert of all my favorite songs.

8. He does the grocery shopping and 98% of the cooking. We have both come to realize that I should not be put in charge of anything involving food. It's not because I'm a bad cook, but because I never think to make food until I'm hungry (at which point I am ravenous and need food right now). Also, and Josh and I both say this all the time, if I had to buy groceries we would find ourselves to have a surplus of turkey bologna, ice cream, and organic Cheetos.

9. He is very, very, very patient, which makes up for the fact that I am very, very, very impatient.

10. He can entertain himself. Josh is never bored and I never have to come up with things for him to do. Sometimes this can be frustrating (like when I have things that I want him to do, and instead he does something else), but most of the time I like it.

11. He lets me pluck his eyebrows. I might have a slight obsession. Plus, his eyebrows go on forever. If he didn't let me pluck them, they would go from one side of his head to the other, connecting at the hairline.

12. He loves cats. And I love cats! So we love cats together.

13. He loves the library. I don't understand people who don't love the library. I mean, it's free! Josh goes to the library at least once a week, which means he carts my books back and forth. There are some things about Josh and the library that I don't love, but that's a different story.

14. We are equally messy. It's kind of bad because it means things are only moderately clean (we both have a tendency to make piles), but it's also nice because we live in an acceptable level of disarray with which we are both comfortable.

15. He motivates me to do more temple work. Josh and I have made it a point to go to the temple whenever we're in a new place, and, honestly, it's entirely Josh's doing. Because he plans our vacations, he always budgets in time for us to visit nearby temples, which is why we've been to 24 different temples together. Last year at this time we took a Grand Temple Tour, which was an amazing experience.

16. He supports me as a student. During my two years (so far) of graduate school, Josh has helped me in innumerable ways, but he supported me when I applied to grad school (and would call him crying almost every day during the application process), when I was interviewing (we almost missed my Pacific interview because we got lost and I was certain it meant I wasn't supposed to continue my education), and when I was choosing where to go (when I was accepted to Purdue he even said he would move to West Lafayette, Indiana for me. Thankfully, he didn't have to).

17. He supports me as a psychologist. It has been hard these past couple years to actually see the ending of all of my schooling. This year, when I worked in a residential alcohol and drug treatment facility, Josh was very understanding about the troubles I faced. Sometimes I would come home and just need to sit and not do anything, or space out and watch tv. Because of confidentiality, I can't really talk to him about specific clients or specific difficulties, but he has been very understanding of that and has never asked me to push those boundaries (and I think I might have done if the situation was reversed because I am endlessly nosey, which is why I'm studying to be a psychologist!)

18. He lets me just be me. The circumstances of our courtship were not ideal, but it also meant that I was at a point where I wasn't trying to be on my best behavior for anyone. It seemed to me that the more I was like myself (my whiney, unwashed, cranky self), the more he loved me. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

19. He loves movies. I have always loved movies. I've seen more movies than pretty much everyone I know. One of my favorite things to do with Josh is go to a movie in the afternoon, then come home and watch another movie. And Josh doesn't think that's weird!

20. He loves history, museums, and learning. Josh likes knowing things. Going places with him is sometimes like having my own personal tour guide. But when he doesn't know things, he's willing to take the time to learn more. And he indulges my curiosity, which is why we went to San Simian on our honeymoon, and why we're going to Hershey, Pennsylvania in August.

21. He makes me laugh. . . a lot! Whether he's singing "Moonriver" in a chipmunk voice or "Johnny Angel" in bass, Josh is pretty dang funny. He doesn't really tell jokes or make puns (thank goodness), but he can make me laugh harder than anyone.

22. He gives great presents. I know I said this earlier in the post, but Josh needs more recognition. He's the kind of person who listens when I say, "I wish I had. . ." and actually does something about it. He's the reason I have the full series box set of Angel, an eliptical machine, and several pairs of cat socks.

23. He likes my family. He actually spends more time with them than I do!

24. He reads the newspaper. So I don't have to!

25. He likes video games, but doesn't play them all the time. He doesn't sit around all day and play Madden, but he will sit, play for half an hour, then get up and do something else.

26. He has three sisters. I think this prepared him appropriately for life with me. Josh was already used to not getting his way.

27. He can find a good deal.
I'm not patient enough to cut coupons or sign up for deals, but Josh does all of that. Most recently he had signed up with various companies that give away free birthday things (like a free burger at Red Robin and free ice cream from Coldstone). He also does things like fill out customer survey forms, which usually yield coupons as a reward.

28. He's pretty good looking, for a boy.

29. He loves me!
That, I think, is the best reason to love him back.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSHERS!

The MAGIC is in the HOLE!

As a longtime fan of the CBS reality series "The Amazing Race," I was quite excited last season when the contestants' final destination city was right here in Portland. As they raced for clues, Emily and I recognized most of the landmarks. Then, the racers had to find a clue hidden by one of the food cart pods right in front of Emily's school on SW 10th street between Alder and Washington. They found the clue, but where would it take them? (hint: watch this video)

Ah ha... Voodoo Doughnut.

Now, when we watched this episode, we had never heard of Voodoo Doughnut; but, Emily and I are from Eugene and Hermiston, respectively, so I suppose that's OK. Though, we did see Ben Lee play at Berbati's Pan, which is Voodoo Doughnut's immediate next door neighbor. They actually are only separated by a wall; They're so close, in fact, if they were siblings, they'd be conjoined twins.

Anyhow, we'd never been there, but had heard from several friends that we should totally check it out. So, earlier this week, I headed downtown to the PCPA Box Office to buy tickets to see "Wicked" at the Keller Auditorium in April. After I was done, I decided to head down there and grab some confections to bring home (Em loves anything with sugar, so I knew she'd be a fan.).

Their selection is quite diverse... and some of it is just plain weird (a maple bar with bacon on top?!?). Here's what I ended up buying:

This is the shop's signature item, the Voodoo Doll Doughnut. A chocolate bar injected with raspberry filling, it's delicious!!

This one's called the "Old Dirty Bastard." Actually, I think it's just called "Dirt" on the Voodoo Doughnut Web site, but the woman at the register called it ODB. It was good regardless of its name.

This little guy is called the "Portland Creme." Emily said it was fantastic!

Sadly, the Voodoo Doll wandered into a bad part of the ShepAlder house... and well, we're still waiting for the results from the "CSI: ShepAlder's Kitchen" team. Our prayers go out to his wife and little Voodoo Doll kids.

One last thing: While I was in there, a woman from Hawaii came in and asked if we knew how to get to Sonic. The woman at the counter assured her that there wasn't one nearby... but, luckily for the Aloha State lady, there was a Sonic fanatic in her midst. She'd seen the commercials and wanted to try it out (as they are apparently not blessed with them in Hawaii), so I directed her to the only Sonic in the Portland-metro area over in Hillsboro.

The woman at the counter told her she should try Burgerville, but I told the woman that lots of people are willing to drive out of there way to go to Sonic (see: Josh and Emily driving in California whilst furiously searching through the "Exit Points of Interets" on their GPS). I was glad I could help.
